Wrestlemania has delivered time and time again over its 34 year history. There has been great moments, highlights, appearances, and matches (and many equally bad of all of those). Some great matches include The Undertaker vs. Triple H, Stone Cold vs. The Rock, and Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart. Here are 5 of my personal favorites and what I think are 5 of the best Wrestlemania matches.
5. TLC II: The Dudley Boyz vs. The Hardy Boyz vs. Edge & Christian (Wrestlemania X-Seven)
There’s been plenty of matches in Wrestlemania history that you could describe as an entertaining car wreck. However, if there is one that stands above all of the rest it is the TLC match at Wrestlemania 17. Aside from being thoroughly entertaining throughout, there are some spots that they include in the permanent highlight rule such as Jeff Hardy hanging and then getting speared by Edge (was a thing of beauty).
4. Randy Savage vs. Ricky Steamboat, Wrestlemania III
Why is this match perfect? Because legend has it that Randy Savage insisted on rehearsing this match several times before Wrestlemania 3. Some people argue for or against that approach but let us face it, this is one of the most entertaining matches in Wrestlemania history. Of Wrestlemania matches, it was also probably the first “5 star classic” in its history. It was a heavy influence on the younger generation of wrestling fans at that time that went on to have careers in wrestling, such as Edge & Christian.
3. Shawn Michaels vs. Razor Ramon, Ladder Match – Wrestlemania X
There were plenty of ladder matches in the independent scene (specifically Stampede Wrestling) and even a ladder match on home video between Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart. However, if there is one that set the standards for the ladder match, it was the first one at Wrestlemania between Shawn Michaels and Razor Ramon.
2. Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. Bret Hart – Wrestlemania XIII
Stone Cold Steve Austin was starting to gain ground in popularity in the WWE. It felt like they were on the brink of something. If Austin 3:16 established Austin’s new character, this match started his run to the top. A star was basically born in this match and wrestling was never the same. They also successfully pulled off a double face/heel turn which is damn near impossible to do in wrestling. This match was one of the greatest brawls in Wrestlemania history with some amazing storytelling. It also featured a great Wrestlemania moment with Steve Austin passing out due to blood loss in the sharpshooter.
1. Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker – Wrestlemania 25
If there is a masterpiece in Wrestlemania history that will probably never be topped, it is the first Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker match at Wrestlemania 25. The Undertaker and Shawn Michaels had been ICONS in wrestling for years. However, this match propelled them from ICONS to “The G.O.A.T” or The Greatest Of All Time. It is simply a thing of beauty. If you have access to the WWE Network and you haven’t seen this match yet, stop everything you are doing and watch it RIGHT NOW.
