Superheroes have had some great video games over the years. Here are 10 I can think of just off the top of my head that are definitely worth playing:
- Spider-Man (PS4)
- Spider-Man 2 (PS1/PS2)
- Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions (Xbox 360/PS3)
- Spider-Man: Maximum Carnage (SNES)
- Batman Arkham City (Xbox 360/PS3)
- Batman Arkham Asylum (Xbox 360/PS3)
- The Adventures of Batman & Robin (SNES/Genesis)
- Lego Batman (Xbox 360/PS3)
- Marvel Ultimate Alliance (Xbox 360/PS3)
- X-Men Origins: Wolverine (Xbox 360/PS3)
As you can look on some of those true all time greats, there seems to be a common theme. 80% of the ones I pulled out on the spot there are starring Batman and Spiderman.
While I can’t complain about how great those games are, I would personally love to see some video games from other heroes that haven’t received as much love, or any love at all.
In fact, I have four ideas four superheroes or superhero team-based video games.
Black Widow as a Stealth Game
Black Widow gained notoriety outside of the comic books when she was introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Iron Man 2. Of course, she is portrayed by the lovely Scarlett Johansson.
Since then, she has developed quite a following. There has been a demand for her to get her own series or movie. Will we ever get that? Only time will tell. However, I think you can take it a step further and give Black Widow her own video game.
Imagine a full on spy game starring our favorite double agent spy, Natasha Romanoff, The Black Widow. Think of something in between the likes of the games Hitman and Metal Gear Solid. You need something that not only takes full advantage of her combat skills but also her stealth skills. I truly believe it it could make for an awesome game.
Oliver Queen on Lian Yu as a Sandbox Survival Game
Green Arrow was always a favorite hero of mine. Mainstream audiences learned about him when the popular CW’s Arrowverse debuted with Stephen Amell as the star. They learned about the origins of the Green Arrow when he was stranded for five years on the island of Lian Yu, with the show often flashing back to that time.
So why not make a whole game based on his time in Lian Yu after his boat crashed? Think of something akin to Far Cry / Open World Sandbox Survival game with Oliver Queen. Like the Far Cry games, he starts off a spoiled rich playboy struggling to get by. However, by the end of the game, he is a total badass.
You could complete missions of survival, finding other inhabitants of the island, and making difficult choices that effect the end game. (Maybe even a save would carry over to a Starling City-based game). I think it would make for a wonderful sandbox-type affair.
Cable as Gears of War/new God of War cinematic type game with Time Travel
Cable has always had a cult-like following since he debuted in 1990. Fans got to experience a near perfect adaptation of this character in the second Deadpool film. So, how would you go about making a great Cable game?
Think of this sort of as a post-apocalyptic Gears of War-type game. You have your big guns and pure heavy destruction. Make it a linear-ish roller coaster ride of a game. Then, take all of that, and even throw in some time travel. Maybe you could even include the ultimate X-Men villain himself, Apocalypse along with his Four Horseman including Warren Worthington III.
It would be very, as I like to say, “Metal” and an adrenaline fueled fun ride.
Justice League Dark = Dark Supernatural Zelda-ish Adventure Game
Justice League Dark is a bit of a dark horse on this list, no pun intended. However, with the launch of the upcoming Swamp Thing series on DC Universe service, it would be a great time to bring in a Justice League Dark game.
You would make this a spooky and supernatural game starring John Constantine, Zatanna, Swamp Thing, and Deadman. Something that would be an open world superhero horror game.
I honestly feel those 4 specific power sets would create a lot of interesting game mechanics. Constantine connection and investigations into the beyond and adding overall narration to the game. Zatanna with her spell casting would definitely add range combat among many other cool abilities. Swamp Thing with his overall brute force combat plus his connections to “The Green.” Then Deadman to inhabit NPCS and sometimes villains and do some infiltration and recon.
Well, that is my list. Anything above you would like to tweak? Do you have any ideas for a superhero game that we haven’t thought of or seen? Let me know in the comments or on social media!
